CONFERENCE PROGRAM

We have another exciting agenda for this year's conference with some notable presenters already committed. Our conference theme, Difficult Choices: Bridging the Gap with IT, is reflective of the financial problems faced by nearly every governmental entity in the country and the accompanying issues for human services programs and the information technology that supports these programs.

In our opening session a group of agency CEOs will discuss how they set priorities for IT when there are more agency budget problems than ever. Our three conference tracks cover: 1) budget and resource strategies, 2) interesting innovations and concepts where IT can help meet program goals, and 3) promising practices from around the country. And, as always, private sector representatives will present the latest in technology and applications that meet program needs.

Pre-conference Workshop
Continuing ISM's 36-year tradition as the premier place for education about information technology in human services, we will hold a special, FREE training session on Sunday afternoon before the official start of the conference. Sue Christie, APHSA's Director of Leadership and Practice Development will conduct an interactive training workshop, "The Common Ground Of High Performance: Bridging The Communication Gap Between Program And IT." Bridging the communication gap is the starting point for assuring that IT is effective in supporting program needs. Participants will learn the most useful communication tools and strategies AND how and when to apply them effectively. This will be an excellent - and practical - addition to the educational part of this year's conference.

WHAT IS APHSA-ISM?

The Information Systems Management (ISM) affiliate of the American Public Human Services Association (APHSA) is the national organization for information technology in state and local government human services. Each year we hold a national conference that attracts a variety of attendees from every part of the human services IT world, including agency executives, CIOs, agency management, technical people, program people, high level federal representatives, and many private companies that provide products and services to human services.

Conference speakers have included state governors, agency CEOs, top ranking federal officials, state legislators, agency CIOs, and other nationally recognized experts in information technology as it relates to human services from both the public and the private sectors.

The ISM officers and executive committee are comprised of agency CIOs from Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Oregon, as well as high-level program people who work in IT from Kansas, Pennsylvania, Utah, and Washington.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE CITY

If you haven't been to this Renaissance City in the last five years, you haven't seen the new Pittsburgh! In a blaze of new construction, new ideas, and new entrepreneurial spirit, Pittsburgh has become one of America's best cities for business.

Located at the confluence of three sparkling rivers and banked on all sides by green hills, Pittsburgh has earned its reputation as one of America's "most livable" cities. Long a center for the production of steel, iron, and glass, Pittsburgh's economy is now driven by technology, medicine, finance and tourism.

Start with the Pittsburgh International Airport, consistently rated one of the best airports in the world for its shopping, connections and passenger flow. With more than 600 non-stop flights per day to 118 destinations, you'll appreciate great access to the conference and the multiple flight options you'll find.

You're going to love Pittsburgh's compact, easily walkable downtown. And America's shortest, cleanest free subway that will whisk you around downtown should you decide that riding is your cup of tea. But what will really float your boat are Pittsburgh's amazing waterfronts, on all three rivers! There's entertainment, nightlife, cruises, water taxis and miles and miles of riverfront trails for morning jogs or evening strolls.

Pittsburgh sports are another major draw, and we'll be right across the river from the new Heinz Field and PNC Park. Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena (home to Mario Lemieux's NHL Penguins) is within a short walk from the heart of downtown.

And the new Pittsburgh has more great restaurants, nightlife and downtown cultural venues than any other city its size in the country.
